MIRFIELD FAMILY & AGRICULTURAL SHOW
SUNDAY 21st AUGUST 2011
Mirfield Show is an annual agricultural and family fun day held at the Showground in Mirfield on the third Sunday in August. It is organised and run by the Mirfield Agricultural Society as a not-for-profit event, and regularly attracts over 10,000 people.
THE ATTRACTIONS
The show is centred around two rings. The Main Ring which hosts the Horse & Pony Show in the morning, followed by main attractions in the afternoon, which have included interactive demonstrations of dog agility, birds of prey, duck herding, sheep shearing, racing terriers, dancers, martial arts, Roman military re-enactments and classic car displays, amongst many others. It has also entertained the crowds with tug of war competitions, children's races, tripe, jelly and banana eating competitions and it's Bush Tucker Challenge. The second ring is the Dog Ring which holds the Fun Dog competitions.
Over the years the showground has also been home to several outdoor stalls, puppet shows, pony rides, fairground rides, fire service displays, animal displays, a food court and the award winning Knottingley Silver Band – not forgetting the symbol of show weekend - the marquee which is home to several craft stalls, plus various rabbit, pigeon, flower, vegetable and domestic exhibitors; all competing for Best in Show awards.
THE ORIGINAL SHOW - 1944
The original Mirfield Show was founded during 1944 ‘to bring a little sunshine into the wartime lives of local people’. The president was Colonel James Walker, and it was opened by Councilor J H Barraclough, chairman of Mirfield Urban District Council. The show reached it's peak in the early 1960s, however after several years of decline it ceased to take place.
THE MODERN SHOW - 1995
In February 1995 the idea was discussed to recreate Mirfield Show, and Mirfield Agricultural Society was founded. It was decided that it was important that the show should give something which reflected the spirit of Mirfield, that was a fun day out for all the whole family, and that the people of Mirfield could be proud of. So on Sunday 20th August the show began again with displays of duck herding and a martial arts and a tug of war organised by Mirfield Sports Council.
SUPPORT
Mirfield Show has continued to grow, thanks to an army of volunteers on the committee and on the day; to a wide range of local businesses and organisations that sponsor attractions, advertise in the program or by taking up a stall on the day; and the public who coming along and join in the fun.
